South Africa has made a winning start in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. In the Group D match in New York, South Africa got off to a good start by registering a 6-wicket win over Sri Lanka.
In a game played on a pitch that was somewhat uncomfortable for batting, South Africa met the low target of 78 runs given by Sri Lanka by losing 4 wickets in 16.2 overs. Although the target was low, the South African batsmen had time to bat. But in the end, South Africa easily found the target.
Quinton de Kock scored 20 runs off 27 balls for South Africa in the win. Similarly, Henrik Klaasen remained unbeaten on 19 runs playing 22 balls. Tristan Stubbs was dismissed for 13 runs off 28 balls. Captain Aidan Markrum added 12 runs.
Wanindu Hasaranga took 2 wickets and Dasun Shanaka and Nuwan Thusra took 1 wicket each for Sri Lanka.
Before that, Sri Lanka, who won the toss and chose to bat, were bundled out for 77 runs in 19.1 overs. Kushal Mendis scored 19 runs in 30 balls. Angelo Mathews added 16 runs and Kamindu Mendis added 16 runs.
South Africa’s Enrique Nortje alone took 4 wickets. While Keshav Maharaj and Kagisho Rabada took 2 wickets each, 1 wicket remained in the name of Otnil Bartman.
Apart from South Africa and Sri Lanka, this group includes Nepal, Netherlands and Bangladesh. Nepal will return to the T20 World Cup after 10 years by facing the Netherlands on Tuesday evening.
