North Carolina. After his national team’s defeat to Uruguay on Wednesday evening, Liverpool footballer Darwin Nunez got into a fight with the spectators. At the final whistle of the Copa America semi-final match, Nunez was seen confronting the Colombian fans in the stands.
According to Uruguayan media outlet El Paes, the clash took place near the residence of the player’s friends and family members. Nunez has not yet commented publicly on the incident. Television cameras and fans captured images of Nunez climbing the railings of the stands at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, and brawling.
In the photo, you can see him facing the Colombian fans. It is also seen that others tried to stop him. It is said that other Uruguayan players are also involved in the incident. Uruguayan captain Jose Maria Gimenez responded that the players were trying to protect their families. Reuters reported that he described the situation in the crowd as a ‘disaster’.
He added, ‘There was no police and we had to protect our family. It was the fault of two or three people who drank too much alcohol. They did not know how to drink.’ Shortly before chaos started in the crowd, after the match ended, there was a clash between the players and the coaching staff on the field itself.
Uruguay failed to make it to the Copa America finals on Monday after losing to Colombia 1(0) in the last four. Colombia will now play against Argentina in the finals on Monday.
Despite starting for Uruguay, Nunez failed to convert even one of his four attempts into a goal. Liverpool signed the forward from Benfica in June 2022 for an initial £6.4m. He has scored 20 goals in 65 appearances for the club.
