Kathmandu. The government, which has banned the popular social media app Tiktok, is also preparing to ban Bigo Live, Likey, Tinder, Snapchat, Telegram and other apps. BBC Nepali Service has written the news that monitoring has been increased with the intention of banning other social networks where users can live like Tiktok.
In a conversation with BBC Nepali Service, Prime Minister’s IT expert Prakash Rayamazhi said that such apps are not social media but anti-social media.
“They have done nothing but spread negative content and misinformation,” he said.
According to Rayamazhi, the Prime Minister’s Office is monitoring such apps by forming a team with experts. The cabinet meeting on November 27 had decided to immediately ban Tiktok saying that it was having a negative impact on social harmony and social environment.
The hearing on 14 writs filed against the government’s decision is pending. Bigo Live and Likey are apps from Singapore-based Bigo Technologies, which are operated by Chinese companies.
Telegram is a Russian messaging app. Similarly, dating app Tinder and messaging app Snapchat are products of American companies.
According to the preliminary study of the Prime Minister’s Office, most of these apps are used for uploading and sharing sexual videos and are having a negative impact on many Nepali citizens.
It is said that after studying all the aspects, the team will submit a report and recommend that sanctions be imposed on that basis. In addition to this, the government has also kept PUBG and Free Fire under surveillance.
