A picture of table tennis players from North Korea and South Korea taking a selfie at the Paris Olympics has gained global attention. Some have praised it as a sign of mutual harmony.
North Korea won silver and South Korea won bronze in mixed doubles. Then South Korean Lim Jong Hoon pulled out his phone and took a picture.
Sometimes the two Koreas even send a joint team to international sports. In the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, both countries marched together and fielded a joint team in women’s ice hockey.Â
The South Korean athletes were referred to as the People’s Republic of Korea by the organizers during the Paris Olympics opening ceremony. While that is the official name of North Korea.
Because of this, the identity of 143 players from South Korea was wrong. Subsequently, the coordinator expressed regret, citing a human error.
