After a six-week election campaign, polls are taking place across the United Kingdom (UK) today.
Millions of Britons are casting votes at 40,000 polling stations across 650 constituencies in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, BBC reported.
Polls which kicked off at 7 am will remain open until 10 pm BST – and then counting will begin straight away, BBC reported.
The party leader who secures at least 326 seats will form the next government.
The major competition is likely between Labor Party leader Sir Keir Starmer and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who represents Conservative Party.
Mr. Starmer cast his vote at Willingham Tenants Hall in Kentish Town in north London. Similarly, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak cast his vote at the polling station in a village hall in Northallerton, about half an hour after the polls opened.
After the polls close at 10pm BST, ballot boxes for the 650 constituencies are taken from polling stations to counting centers and counts begin immediately.
The Electoral Commission, for the first time in a UK general election, made it mandatory for the voters to bring a photo ID since May 2023, while casting votes in person. Passports and driving licenses are among the accepted forms of ID.
