Texas – The number of deaths due to storms in Houston, Texas, USA has increased to seven, officials said.
Houston, the fourth largest city in the United States, was hit by heavy rains and winds of up to 100 miles per hour on Thursday, bringing the death toll to seven as three more people were confirmed dead.
The strong storm brought down trees and power lines in residential areas, while the National Weather Service confirmed that the storm hit the suburbs of Cyprus.
According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the victims included an 85-year-old woman who died when her home was struck by lightning.
A 60-year-old man was found unconscious while going to fill his oxygen tank after power was cut in a large part of the storm-affected area, and the man was pronounced dead. It has been confirmed that another 57-year-old man died when the pole fell while moving an electric pole.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire said the latest details of the four deaths after the storm were not immediately available.
Schools were closed Friday in Houston, home to 2.3 million people whose economy centers around oil and petrochemicals, and non-essential workers were asked to stay home.
