In Kagbeni Mustang the Mukti Kshetra—4 Kagbeni Dam was hit by a flood that caused significant damage on Sunday evening. The flood resulting from the overflowing Mukti Nath River branch caused substantial destruction after breaching the banks of the river flowing through the upper Kagbeni village.
Along with the continuous monsoon the flood from the overflowing cold-water canal has initially estimated to have swept away around two dozen houses. The flood also affected Kagbeni Mukti Kshetra including local houses, shops, hotels, the police station building ward offices as reported by Rinjin Namgel Gurung Chairman of Kagbeni Mukti Kshetra Rural Municipality.
The flood also swept away religious sites dharmashalas pilgrim inns, temples, and more in the Kagbeni Khola area. The flood caused damage to the local NNBI Bank and the Janashanti Secondary School noted Chairman Gurung. Suddenly the flood also washed away about half a dozen shops and equipment of an under-construction house in Kagbeni Khola. The flood affected houses in the south-eastern part of Kagbeni Khola and transformed the region into a flood-stricken area.
The flood washed away temporary wooden bridges within Kagbeni and also disrupted the construction work of permanent concrete bridges like Kathapul and Jomsom-Korala. Moreover it was reported that the flood inundated two parked vehicles in front of a hotel.
On Sunday evening the Mukti Nath Kag Khola in Kagbeni experienced a sudden rise in water levels. After the risk escalated, the locals were safely evacuated to a secure place.
The flood aftermath in Kag Khola has turned the riverbank settlement of Kagbeni into a wasteland. Anup Keshi a local resident of Mustang stated that while the flood didn’t cause human casualties it did inflict physical damages. He mentioned that preparations are being made to assess the damages caused by the flood and that a rescue team along with security personnel and government officials has been mobilized for relief efforts.
