A newborn baby who was rescued from the Biratnagar-based Green Cross Hospital is reported to have been sold for seven lakh rupees.
The hospital’s doctor, Tapeshwar Lal Karn, is alleged to have sold the baby as part of his plan.
The initial investigation by the police revealed that Dil Maya Rajbanshi, the biological mother of the baby, stated that Dr. Karn initially demanded five lakh rupees for the baby’s purchase and an additional two lakh rupees for medical treatment.
The police rescued the baby from Dil Maya’s home on Tuesday. The baby, born to an unmarried couple, had been sold and then recovered. Dil Maya Rajbanshi, the mother, claimed to have given a bribe to the police, stating that the baby had been sold.
The investigation indicates that Dil Maya Rajbanshi was involved in the baby’s sale in Adarsha Tol of Katari Municipality-2 in Morang. Since the baby needed treatment, Rajbanshi admitted to paying two lakh rupees for treatment after keeping the baby in an ICU.
Six individuals have been arrested by Morang Police in connection with this incident. The arrested individuals include Dr. Karn, Dil Maya who purchased the baby, Sudha Rajbanshi who works at the hospital, Surya Narayan Rajbanshi (Dil Maya’s husband), Govind Rai from Hatuwagadhi Rural Municipality-4 in Bhojpur, and Nirmla Yadav from Kalyanpur Municipality-12 in Siraha.
The newborn baby, born on July 14, was given an additional five days by the court for investigation. Morang Police have provided this information as the investigation continues.
