In the ongoing ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup in South Africa, the men’s Under-19 national cricket team of Nepal ultimately broke free.
They defeated Afghanistan by one wicket in a suspenseful final over. Although it was their first win in the championship, it was a crucial one.
They qualified for the super six competition thanks to their victory. They finished third, behind Pakistan and New Zealand, with two losses and one victory.
For both teams, winning this match was essential to go on to the Super Six stage. The suspense and excitement built to a climax as teams’ fortunes drastically changed right up until the very end.
With the ninth wicket falling for Nepal, the match was poised precariously. It was anybody’s game at that moment.
Thanks in major part to Aakash Chand’s excellent bowling, the bowlers were at the top of their game as they bowled out Afghanistan for a pitiful 145 runs in just 40.1 overs.
The quick bowler took five wickets in an impressive display of accuracy and speed as he tore through the opposition’s innings.
But Afghanistan’s bowling backroom crew persevered, rallying from 43/6 and 88/8 to notch up a match-winning score of 145.
Team Nepal came very close to losing the run chase. It would have been a different story if Dev Khanal hadn’t made a heroic 58 under difficult conditions.
After going through a lean stretch with the bat, captain Khanal was finally able to find form at the appropriate time.
Although it was a fairly attainable goal, their poor batting performance nearly cost them the game they should have won handily.
They had to battle for every run to grind out a long victory at the end of the day, and the match ended on a cliffhanger.
To be fair, Afghanistan defended a low target, but they bowled well and painfully came very near to giving their side an unlikely victory.
Head Coach Jagat Tamatta boys have another opportunity to make a lasting impression on the competition.
The youthful colts need to take heart from their victory over Afghanistan, which will boost morale, and enter the following round with a winning mindset. They also need to put in some effort to ride the momentum.
Given their formidable opponents, Nepal faces a significant test and challenge in this Super Six round.
To defy the odds, one must possess extraordinary concentration, all-around talent, and a high degree of consistency.
They also need to maintain their confidence, determination, and complete attention.
It is imperative that they be at the top of their game at all times due to the competition’s high stakes. Furthermore, there is very little space for incompetence or mistakes.
The weak point for Team Nepal is still their batting. In the previous three games, the batting average was significantly lower.
Going future, the batting unit needs to significantly improve. Batters need to refocus on the basics, develop their technical skills, give their shots their all, and put in their best effort.
They need to quit allowing their emotions to control them and instead practice self-control, patience, and self-confidence.
Similarly, in order to complete the job, the bowlers must exert additional effort and continuously play to their strengths.
They must continue to exercise self-control, accuracy, and precision while avoiding giving up an excessive number of extra runs or limits. To prevent runs from being scored and put pressure on hitters, the fielding has to be improved.
Before facing Asian champions Bangladesh on Wednesday, Team Nepal needs to stay focused, confident, and have a winning mentality.
