Kathmandu. Nepal Cricket Association (CAN) is building Nepal A team for the first time.
The Nepal A team will be formed based on the performance of the sixth edition of the Prime Minister’s Cup one-day national tournament. It will not be easy for selectors to make Nepal A team when the performance of young players is strong.
According to CAN’s annual calendar, Nepal has five 50-over series and three T-20 series with Canada from the second week of February, with Ireland A in March and April.
It is estimated that former players who have done well at home and played for Nepal will be the first choice for the head coach of Nepal A. 4 contenders have been seen as the head coach of Nepal A.

Jagat Tamata is a successful coach of Nepali cricket. In his main training, Nepal played U-19 World Cup in 2012, 2016 and 2024. From 2016 to 2019, Tamata was the head coach of the Nepali national cricket team. Under his coach, Nepal got historic OII recognition in 2018.
Tamata is also considered to be the lucky coach of Nepali cricket. He has a decade of experience as an assistant coach in the senior team.
Currently, he is the head coach of Nepal in the U-19 World Cup. Can give him the responsibility of the head coach of Nepal A and later he may give the responsibility of U-19 to someone else. Being successful in U-19 cricket with the senior team, he is one of the contender coaches of Nepal A.
Basant Shahi
Basant Shahi, the chief coach of Lumbini region, is also among the contenders. Basant has been working as an assistant coach of the Nepali cricket team for the past one year. Under his head coach, Nepal won the U-16 ACC Eastern Region title. He was the head coach when Nepal played the U-19 Asia Cup in 2021.
He has been continuously producing new players in his training while staying in Rupandehi. He has been supporting Monty Desai as an assistant coach for the last one year. As a result, he is also among the contender coaches of Nepal A.
Shakti Gauchan
Shakti is Nepal’s most successful spin all-rounder. He played for the Nepali team from 2002 to 2018. Shakti is not only a successful player but also a coach. The young all-rounder of the Nepalese cricket team, Kushal Malla, is a product of Shakti. Similarly, Sushan Bhari is also Shakti’s disciple. He has prepared some players in U-19 and domestic cricket.
Shakti has been running his own Star Cricket Academy in Bhairahawa. Shakti, who has a simple and cheerful nature, reached Singapore two months ago and took the ICC Level-2 coaching course. That is why Shakti is also a contender coach of Nepal A.
Gyanendra Mall
Nepal’s former captain Gyanendra Malla is the main contender for the head coach of the A team. Gyanendra is working as the head coach of the Nepal APF team in the Prime Minister’s Cup One Day National Tournament.
His contract with APF is only till this Prime Minister’s Cup. Because of that, there is a possibility that he will see Nepal A after that.
Malla took a break from the Nepali cricket team last July after more than a decade and a half as a player. He also has a long experience of working as a coach at the Kathmandu Cricket Training Center.
Being a successful batsman of Nepali cricket, there is a high possibility of becoming a coach of Nepal A. Two months ago, Gyanendra did the ICC Level-2 coaching course.
