Kathmandu, Oct 7: Nepal has secured a silver medal in karate in the ongoing 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. Nepal had to settle for silver after its player Arika Gurung was defeated in the final. In the women’s 68 kg group, the 19-year-old lost to Sofya Berultseva of Kazakhstan by 3-0 points.
With this win, Gurung has become the first Nepali athlete to win silver medal in karate at the Asian Games, bringing second medals to Nepal. Earlier Nepal won a bronze medal in kabaddi.
Earlier today, Gurung beat Yan Kai Ho of Hong Kong in the semifinals, making it to the finals. She defeated Ho by 8-4 points. In the quarterfinals today, Gurung defeated Sawae Yuzuki from Japan. Although the match ended in a 1-1 draw, Gurung won on the basis of points.
