New Delhi. India will play against the most victorious Australia on Sunday for the ongoing ODI World Cup title at home.
Ahead of the match in Ahmedabad, the Indian team is looking strong in confidence. Having won all 9 matches in the league stage, India won by 70 runs after giving New Zealand a target of 398 runs in the semi-final on Wednesday.
In this match, Virat Kohli set a record for batting and Mohammad Sami for bowling. Kohli broke Sachin Tendulkar’s world record by completing his 50th century in one-day international cricket. He equaled Sachin’s record in the ongoing World Cup.
On the other hand, Sami took 7 wickets against New Zealand and became the Indian bowler who took the most wickets in one match of ODI cricket. Earlier, Stuart Binny took 6 wickets in 2014. Sammy also became the first bowler to take 7 wickets in a single match in the knockout stages of the World Cup.
Not only that, he has also become the Indian bowler who has taken the most wickets in a single World Cup. The number of wickets he has taken in the ongoing tournament has reached 23. Earlier, Zahir Khan took 21 wickets. Sami has an opportunity to take more wickets in the final. Therefore, the number of wickets he will take may increase further.
Kohli is the batsman who scored the most runs in the ongoing World Cup. He has scored 711 runs with 3 centuries and 5 fifties in 10 matches played in the tournament. He is almost certain to become the highest run-scoring batsman.
He is followed by India’s Rohit Sharma with 550 runs and Australia’s David Warner with 528 runs. Quinton de Kock of South Africa who scored 594 runs, Rachin Ravindra of New Zealand with 578 runs and Daryl Mitchell of New Zealand with 552 runs are out of the race to surpass Virat. Their team was eliminated from the semi-finals.
In the ongoing tournament, India’s Shreyas Iyer has scored 526 runs with 2 centuries and 3 fifties, Australia’s Mitchell Marsh has scored 426 runs with 2 centuries and a half century and Glenn Maxwell has scored 398 runs with 2 centuries.
Australia’s Adam Zampa is following India’s Sami with 22 wickets. India’s Jasprit Bumrah has taken 18 wickets, Ravindra Jadeja has taken 16 wickets and Australia’s Josh Hazlewood has taken 14 wickets.
After his performance against New Zealand, Schreyer Iyer became the batsman who scored a century in the lowest number of balls in the knockout stages of the World Cup. He completed his century in 67 balls in that match.
Similarly, captain Rohit Sharma has become the batsman who hit the most sixes in the World Cup. He has reached 51 sixes, breaking the record held by Chris Gayle.
In the World Cup, India has reached the final after 12 years and is trying to win the title for the third time. After winning the World Cup for the first time in 1983, India won the World Cup only in 2011. In the 2003 World Cup, India lost to Australia in the final.
Australia, the 5-time winner, is playing the final for the eighth time. In the first edition held in 1975, Australia was defeated in the final and then in the 1996 edition also reached the final and was disappointed with Sri Lanka.
After winning three consecutive editions, Australia is playing the final for the first time since 2015. In the three previous editions of the World Cup held in Asian soil, Australia was once the winner and once the runner-up, but in the 2011 edition, it could not advance beyond the quarter-finals. India became the world champion for the last time after defeating Sri Lanka in the final of that edition in Mumbai.
