The phrase “बसुधैव कुटुम्बकम” carries a profound message. It means “The world is one family” in English. This inclusive perspective encourages us to rise above our boundaries, languages, and beliefs and envision a global family.
During the recent G-20 Summit held under the leadership of India, this sentiment of human-centric development and progress was emphasized. As one Earth family, we are responsible for taking care of our planet. As a family, we support each other for mutual progress, and together we move towards a shared future, even in these challenging times of unprecedented global realities like the COVID-19 pandemic.
The current global landscape is different from before COVID-19. Three significant changes can be observed:
-
Shifting from a GDP-centered perspective to a more human-centric view: Recognizing the importance of focusing on human well-being rather than just economic growth.
-
Understanding the significance of global supply chains’ resilience and reliability.
-
Strengthening multilateral organizations to promote inclusivity.
When I assumed the presidency of G-20 in December 2022, I highlighted the role of mental attitude in driving change. This perspective is crucial, especially in bringing marginalized aspirations from the Global South into the mainstream.
The “The Boys of Global South” summit held in January 2023 with participation from 125 nations, under my presidency, was a significant initiative. It aimed to bring forward suggestions and ideas from the Global South into a prominent space. During my presidency, we also aimed to include the African Union as a permanent member of G-20, strengthening global representation.
Our current interconnected world also presents challenges. As we approach the mid-term of the 2030 Agenda, many express concerns and doubts about achieving sustainable development goals. G-20, under my leadership in 2023, has set a direction for the implementation of these goals and addressing climate change, building on India’s ancient tradition of living in harmony with nature and modern contributions to climate adaptation.
In conclusion, the concept of “बसुधैव कुटुम्बकम” or “The world is one family” serves as an inspirational guiding principle, especially in today’s evolving global landscape. The changes in global perspectives, supply chains, and multilateralism are significant steps forward. As we face challenges and uncertainties, the G-20, under my presidency, is committed to driving progress while respecting our planet and fostering unity among nations.
The many countries of Global South are in various stages of development, and paying significant attention to climate adaptation efforts is crucial. Climate adaptation efforts should be aligned with climate finance and technology transfer. Addressing climate change requires moving beyond purely restrictive mindsets that claim climate change cannot be stopped. Innovative thinking is needed to address these challenges.
Our focus is on ‘The Chennai High-Level Principles for a Sustainable and Resilient Blue Economy,’ which centers on maintaining a healthy and clean ocean. Under my leadership, we are also working on establishing a climate-resilient system for clean and green hydrogen production.
In 2015, we initiated the International Solar Alliance. Now, we aim to cooperate with the world on biofuels for a sustainable energy transition. Climate change impacts necessitate global collaboration, and we are ready to assist in the transition to energy sources that are beneficial for the environment.
For India, the G-20 chairmanship is not just a high-level diplomatic effort. As India is the mother of democracy and model of diversity, we have opened the doors of this experience to the world.
The democratization of climate adaptation efforts is the best way forward. Similar to how individuals make daily decisions about their long-term health, nations can make informed decisions based on the long-term health of our planet. Like yoga has become a global health movement, we aim to promote “Lifestyles for Sustainable Environment” worldwide.
Climate adaptation also plays a significant role in ensuring food and nutrition security. Climate-smart agriculture, along with efforts like the Green Revolution, will help guarantee food security. International cooperation in addressing food security and nutrition, along with climate-smart agriculture, is essential.
Technological advancements are rapid, but making them inclusive is equally crucial. In the past, technological advancements benefited only certain sections of society, contributing to inequality. Using digital public infrastructure (DPI), we can extend the benefits of technological progress more equitably.
India’s experience is unique among the G-20 nations. Our simple, scalable, and enduring solutions empower marginalized populations. Our leadership in various fields, from space to sports, showcases India’s diversity and its potential for development. Indian women, in particular, are playing a significant role in leadership across various sectors. We aim to change the narrative from “Women’s Development” to “Women’s Leadership Development.”
India’s presidency of G-20 is not just about high-level diplomatic efforts. India, with its rich history, is opening a door for others to experience these unique qualities firsthand. I am confident that our G-20 representatives will confirm this from their own experiences.
Our G-20 presidency aims to remove divisions, dispel obstacles, and sow the seeds of cooperation, where turmoil will yield unity, and shared destiny will overcome solitude. We are determined to make the world a better place, where everyone’s voice is heard, and everyone’s contribution is valued. Our commitment will be evident in our actions and results.
