Co-host Sweden comfortably secures third place by defeating Australia 2-0 in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. In a match held in Brisbane on Saturday, Sweden’s easy victory was achieved with goals from Fridolina Rolfö and Kosovare Asllani.
Rolfö’s penalty goal in the 30th minute of the competitive game gave Sweden an early lead. After a foul by Stina Blackstenius in the penalty box, the referee’s VAR assistance awarded Sweden a penalty, which Rolfö successfully converted.
Rolfö’s flick header in the 62nd minute, assisted by Asllani, sealed Sweden’s victory. With this win, Sweden avenged their 4-0 loss to Australia in a friendly match played on November 12, 2022.
This victory marks Sweden’s third-place finish in the tournament. Previously, Sweden had reached the quarter-finals in the 2019 edition and secured third place in the 1991 and 2011 editions.
The final of this edition will be contested between England and Spain on Sunday at the Australia Stadium in Sydney. Spain defeated Sweden 2-1, while England defeated the host team Australia 3-1, marking their first-ever appearance in the Women’s World Cup final.
The 9th edition of the Women’s World Cup has produced a new champion. Germany, the champion of two editions, the United States, four-time champions, and Norway, one-time champions, have all been eliminated, with Japan also exiting the tournament at the quarter-finals stage.
