Dean Thompson, the American Ambassador to Nepal, met with Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal Prachanda. The meeting took place at the Prime Minister residence in Baluwatar and they discussed various subjects including the implementation of the Millennium Challenge Corporation MCC bilateral relations between the two countries and the support that the United States could provide for Nepal economic development.
According to high-level sources Ambassador Thompson had earlier expressed interest in Prachanda participation in the United Nations General Assembly. The Foreign Ministry was preparing for Prachanda visit to China in September but the exact date was yet to be finalized. China had invited Prachanda to participate in the Boao Forum for Asia held in Hainan province from March 14 to 17 but he had canceled the visit at the last moment and instead traveled to India.
In July the US Assistant Secretary of State Donald Lu also visited Nepal to discuss the implementation of the MCC project. The United States has assured Nepal’s political parties of its commitment to the successful implementation of the MCC project which includes providing a grant of $500 million to Nepal.
The MCC agreement was approved by the parliament on Falgun 15 2078 BS along with 12 additional explanatory statements by the ruling coalition.
