In the latest edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, Spain and Switzerland secured victories. On Friday, Switzerland defeated the Asian team Philippines with a score of 2-0. Despite controlling the game for 74% of the time, Switzerland had to rely on a penalty to score the first goal. However, they managed to break through the strong Filipino defense and scored their first goal in the 64th minute.
For Switzerland, Ramona Bachmann scored in the 45th minute, and in the 64th minute, Serena Puvogel added another goal, leading them to a well-deserved victory. With this win, Switzerland earned three points and topped their group.
New Zealand, the co-host of the tournament, secured the second position in the same group with an equal three points. In the group, Norway and the Philippines are yet to earn any points.
In another match, Spain defeated Costa Rica 3-0. In this game held at Wellington Regional Stadium, Spain took the lead with an own goal by Shirley Cruz of Costa Rica. Soon after, Aitana Bonmati and Esther Gonzalez scored goals for Spain.
With 81% possession, Switzerland currently holds the third position in the group stage.
