Indian government banned 10 YouTube channels, Dhruv Rathi’s channel is also included

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India has instructed Google’s online video sharing platform YouTube to block 45 videos of 10 channels. Many big YouTube channels are also included in this list. These include videos from Dhruv Rathi’s channel. The total viewership of the 45 videos which the government has ordered to be removed is more than 1 crore 30 lakh.

According to the news of English website India Today, the government has taken this decision on the basis of input received from intelligence agencies on 23 September. According to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, an order has been issued to suspend 10 YouTube channels that are spewing venom against the country through YouTube and affecting India’s relations with friendly countries. Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur has said that this step has been taken in the interest of the country, we will continue to do so in the future as well.

The Ministry of Information issued a statement saying that “orders were issued to block the relevant videos on 23.09.2022 under the provisions of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021.” These videos included fake news and morphed videos intended to spread hatred among religious communities.

According to the ministry, examples of these include false claims such as the government taking away religious rights of certain communities, violent threats against religious communities, declaration of civil war in India and others. Such videos have been found to have the potential to spoil communal harmony and disrupt public order in the country.

Some of the videos banned by the ministry were being used to spread misinformation on issues related to the Agneepath scheme, Indian Armed Forces, national security apparatus of India, Kashmir and others.

“The content was found to be false and sensitive from the point of view of national security and India’s friendly relations with foreign states,” the ministry said. Some of the videos depicted incorrect external boundary of India, with parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh outside Indian territory. Such cartographic misrepresentation was found to be prejudicial to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India.

The content blocked by the ministry was found to be prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India, the security of the State, friendly relations of India with foreign States and public order in the country. Hence this content has been covered under the ambit of Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

The ministry said the government is committed to thwart any attempt to undermine India’s sovereignty and integrity, national security, foreign relations and public order.
