Britain is holding general elections today. It is expected thatthe main competition in these elections will be between Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party and the opposition Labor Party. It has been claimed that the Labor Party will win the majority in the survey conducted before the election.
In this British election, people will be able to vote at polling stations from 7 am to 10 pm local time. These elections will be held in all parts of the United Kingdom, including England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales .
The deadline for nominations for the 2024 general election was Friday 7 June 2024. Candidates contesting elections campaign for their parties for six weeks before polling day.
On May 22, the Prime Minister had announced July 4 as the date for the general election. Eight days later, on May 30, Parliament was dissolved.
In this general election, people aged 18 and over in every part of the UK will vote to elect their MP. This voting will be for a total of 650 parliamentary seats. The elected person will represent the constituency in the House of Commons , the lower house of the British Parliament , for five years.
A total of 392 parties have been registered in this British election. However, the main competition is between Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives and Keir Starmer’s Labor Party, the main opposition leader. A survey conducted before the election has predicted that the Labor Party will win an overwhelming majority in Parliament . If the poll proves correct, Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s 18-month term will come to an end and Labor will take charge of the country for the first time in 14 years in Britain on Friday morning.
The Conservatives have been ruling Britain for the past 14 years. However, these years have been full of upheaval in political and economic terms and there have been five Conservative Prime Ministers in the UK in the last eight years.
In 2020, Keir Starr was elected President of the Labor Party. However, after Starmer became president, the party suffered its worst defeat in 85 years. He immediately announced his mission to make the party victorious again .
Starmer’s efforts to bring the Labor Party back to the center of British politics and appeal to a wider electorate seem to have succeeded. Four years later, the 61-year-old Starmer could take over Britain’s top job, according to a survey.
