Nepal Communist Party Chairman K.P. Sharma Oli Accuses Government of Intimidation in the Gold Smuggling Case Investigation
On Sunday Nepal Communist Party Chairman K.P. Sharma Oli accused the government of intimidating the investigation into the gold smuggling case by forming a high-level scrutiny committee.
Addressing the party’s public program on Sunday Chairman Oli alleged that the government has obstructed the impartial high-level scrutiny committee’s formation to investigate the gold smuggling case. He stated that the government has created obstacles due to fear.
He raised questions about the governments involvement in the gold smuggling case mentioning that former Prime Ministers are also implicated. He questioned whether the government is not linked to the gold smuggling case. If the government is not involved then why is it afraid of the high-level scrutiny committee? He further emphasized The government has closed its doors even before the investigation begins. Why is it so scared ?
He highlighted that gold is not the only thing brought inside in violation other goods were also brought without checks.
He expressed his astonishment, stating Was this a Gold Touch? Anything that Bhansar (a reference to the illegal market) brings in turns into gold? Gold is smuggled cigarettes are smuggled vehicles are smuggled, items are smuggled. How astonishing! Even Bhansar can turn anything into gold!
Oli stressed that since the country is going through a difficult time every conscious Nepali should stand up and speak. He indicated that the situation demands alertness from all.
He also asserted that illegal items need to be stopped from being smuggled into the country and checks should be stringent even beyond Bhansar.
He clarified Others have not been checked. Revenue is not generated from Bhansar’s activities. Business does not occur from Bhansar. Ultimately, business is taking place somewhere else.
Thus he urged for rigorous checks on all channels to prevent illegal activities.
Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has claimed that even though he did not receive 33 kilograms of gold, he is facing prosecution by the government he led.
During a press conference held at the party office on Sunday, Oli, who is also the chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), stated that before the formation of the government under his leadership, he was already facing allegations of involvement in gold smuggling, even though he did not receive the said gold.
“Even before our government was formed, there were many instances of various people bringing in and taking out considerable amounts of gold. We formed a high-level investigation committee and gold wasn’t found. But actions were taken against those who were already implicated. They are still in jail,” Oli stated.
“We sent the gold outside, where did it disappear? We didn’t receive it, but we couldn’t trace it. However, whatever happened, it wasn’t something new. It had already happened in the past. When we found out, we formed an investigation committee. But after it went missing, we will bring it under legal scrutiny and carry out a thorough investigation,” he added.
Oli further expressed his doubts about the ongoing gold investigation, mentioning that the government under current leadership is not comprehending the matter properly. “The current government doesn’t seem to understand the gold case investigation properly.
Even though we didn’t receive the 33 kilograms of gold, they are still conducting investigations. They should conduct further investigations after understanding the situation. If the current government raises questions, then go ahead and carry out more investigations,” he said.
The former Prime Minister Oli emphasized that his previous government also faced similar accusations and investigations.
