In the quaint little village of Khara, amidst green paddy fields, resides the 96-year-old ‘Beloved Mother,’ affectionately known as Piyari Gurung. She lives in Kavasoti Municipality-4, Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East), in Nepal. Though her house may be small, her heart is immense. She is known for her act of donating all her property to Saraswati Ma Vi School under her own name.
Even though she is childless and living alone after her husband, a retired Indian Army soldier, passed away, her small dwelling stands as a witness to her solitary existence. But Piyari Aama, as her neighbors call her, has not let her circumstances define her. She has generously donated eight katthas of land to Saraswati Ma Vi School in her village. And though she gives away everything she owns, she never takes anything in return, saying, “I have already given, and I won’t take it back. Whatever I plant here will be for the betterment of the school.”
Piyari Aama’s benevolence extends beyond her own property. After retiring from the Indian Army, she receives a pension that she selflessly utilizes to support others. But her biggest passion lies in donating to educational institutions, especially her own village school. The chairperson of the School Management Committee, Sushil Poudel, revealed that she contributes her personal savings to the school whenever she can. He said, “Her intention is to support others, and she gives her full cooperation to the school whenever needed.”
Piyari Aama’s unselfish nature is evident in the way she donates her own money to the school at various intervals. She doesn’t seek anything for herself nor does she hesitate to lend a helping hand to those in need. Her selflessness has earned her the respect and admiration of her community and the school treats her with the utmost reverence recognizing her as the most generous donor.
With her unconditional donations for educational development, the school authorities have initiated the construction of a memorial pillar in her honor on her donated land. The Chief of the Education Department in Kavasoti Municipality, Kshetra Bahadur Bhandari, confirmed this, saying, “Piyari Aama’s selfless donations towards education are significant. We must build the memorial pillar as a tribute to her and this will stand as a mark of respect for her generosity.
Though her house may be small her heart is big and the impact of her altruistic deeds has touched the lives of many. Her selflessness and devotion to education have earned her the esteemed title of ‘Beloved Mother.
