Bajhang, August 26: Severe damage is occurring due to floods and drought in the Bajhang and Tikapur areas. Even in Kailali, damage from floods and drought is increasing. The residents of Bhajani are unable to sleep during the monsoon season.
“Floods from Bajhang and landslides create destruction. People have to live on the road for two to three months,” said local Suresh Chaudhary, “For us, the government is like non-existent during the three months of floods.” He emphasized the need to find long-term solutions that go beyond providing comfort and alleviate the suffering.
Ramkrishna Chaudhary of Bhajani also indicated that short-term reassurances offered during the crisis do not lead to a lasting solution. Identifying the main issue of floods and landslides, he suggested concentrating on practical work. “Floods result from leaving the fields barren. It is impossible to cultivate the land that has been flooded. You have to stay awake all night worrying about when the flood will come,” Chaudhary pointed out. He emphasized the need for long-term solutions to the floods and landslides.
The damage caused by floods and drought in Bajhang and Tikapur is extensive, amounting to crores. Particularly, most of Bhajani’s areas are located downstream of rivers that originate in hills and mountains. “After the floods in Bhajhang, the problem increases. The risk of floods remains for months due to the blocked water discharge,” said local Rita Bohara.
The Mayor of Bhajani Municipality, Kewal Chaudhary, explained the various reasons behind the issue in Bhajani and Tikapur. Bhajani is surrounded by rivers on all sides, including from all four directions. “Even the Kailash Dam in India contributes to the problem. After India shut down the Kailash Dam, its effects have increased in Bhajani,” said Mayor Chaudhary.
Member of Parliament from Kailali Constituency No. 3, Ganga Chaudhary Hulaki, also highlighted the problems caused by the Karnali Chisapani road. Due to floods, and the road being more than 10-12 feet higher than the ground, the issue has been exacerbated. “Even before, there was heavy rainfall in the Chisapani region of Kailali. When the water does not drain, and the road is higher than the land, it causes flooding,” she explained.
An event to celebrate National Honor has highlighted the incomplete work of the stone embankment in Rani Jamar Kuleriya. Despite incomplete work in some parts, the stone embankment constructed during the event has caused flooding in some areas. The event’s organizer, Kedar Shrestha, pointed out that due to budget constraints, work could not be carried out everywhere. This event has affected stone embankment in areas where it was not left.
Presently, due to active monsoons, most parts of the country are experiencing heavy rainfall. In the coming three days, heavy rainfall is also likely in various parts of the country. Citizens are advised to stay alert during this time by meteorologist Sajina Shakya. The Kailali region, including Tikapur, Bhajani, Joshipur, and Janaki Rural Municipalities, has been advised to stay safe. Over a hundred families have been displaced from floods in Tikapur and Bhajani. The Karnali, Mohana, Patharaiya, Kandra, and Khutiyal rivers in Kailali are causing trouble.
