Kathmandu. Google has started ‘Project Green Light‘ to reduce pollution by making traffic lights smart. Using the data in Google Maps and artificial intelligence, Google has taken forward the project of making traffic lights smart.
Unorganized traffic lights in urban areas cause unnecessary traffic jams. In that case, even when the vehicles are stopped, they are starting, while some are moving forward slowly. As a result, carbon emissions are being increased unnecessarily. The company said that this will be managed with the help of AI.
Google has published information on how traffic lights can be made smarter by using data from Google Maps through a blog on Monday .
Under the Project Green Light launched by Google, AI first studies the traffic on any route. In particular, it analyzes how long a vehicle stops, how long it has to wait in a traffic jam, and whether traffic lights are centrally managed.
AI then identifies how to improve the traffic flow and how long to turn on the red light according to the traffic flow on the route.
Apart from that, it also suggests how the traffic system in any place can be organized to the engineers working in urban route management.
At the initial stage, Project Green Light has been tested in more than a dozen cities around the world. This system has been tested in cities with high traffic, such as Rio de Janeiro, Seattle, Bangalore, and Boston.
Google has provided a dashboard to cities where the system has been tested. It is said that traffic flow data and suggestions for managing it are kept on that dashboard.
By following the suggestions given by Google’s AI tool, the passenger will turn towards the green lighted road instead of the red lighted area of the traffic. It is claimed that a positive change has been seen from this.
So far, ‘Project Green Light’ has been used in more than 70 intersections.
In the initial phase, Google’s project has reduced the number of cars stopping at any red light by 30 percent and reduced pollution by 10 percent at every turn.
Google plans to expand this project to thousands of modes in hundreds of cities around the world. Google believes that it will manage traffic in a proper way in the future.
