The government has decided to close the social network ‘Tiktok‘ after concluding that the activities that disrupt social harmony have increased. In recent times, the government has decided to close down Tiktok in Nepal due to the fact that there is an increase in the activities of disturbing social, religious and communal relations through Tiktok.
General Secretary of CPN (Maoist Centre) Dev Prasad Gurung said that the government’s decision is welcome and it should be fully implemented. According to him, the government has taken the right decision at the right time by adopting caution as TikTok is being misused to spread immoral activities in the society.
In recent times, due to improper practice of Tik Tok, content that incites social harmony has been being propagated. It is a common understanding that false propaganda spreading negative illusions on individuals, communities and the entire system is creating a negative atmosphere beyond the truth.
The government has claimed that the government has taken the decision to close down Tiktok immediately to control the possible risks due to the increase in family relations, divorce, social deviation, personal insults, violation of natural rights of individuals due to Tiktok.
Mahesh Bertaula, the parliamentary party whip of the Nepal Communist Party (UML), said that the government should ensure the legal system and not regulate the social media. He said, “Due to Tiktok, there have been wrongful activities in the family, society and nation. There has also been unwanted work from Tiktok. However, this is not the way to close social networks. It should be regulated by law.
UML leader Mahesh Basnet also posted on social media and said that the government’s decision to stop TikTok is welcome. He also suggested the government to regulate other social networks and YouTube.
Dolprasad Aryal, the vice-chairman of the Rashtriya Swatantra Party, opined that regulation should be done by making laws rather than controlling. Congress General Minister Gagan Kumar Thapa commented that although regulation is necessary to discourage those who misuse social media, social media should not be closed in the name of regulation.
If Tiktok is used positively, it is a suitable medium for interviewing political parties and activists with the public. However, the violation of personal freedom by misuse of technology, the content that can increase criminal activities in the society is coming in a big way, so the necessity of effective regulation has increased.
Janmat Party’s central spokesperson Dr. Sharad Singh Yadav said that in the name of freedom of expression, there is a need to be alert as there is a lot of violence going on in Tik Tok and attacks on personal freedom. He said, “In the name of freedom of expression, some people and groups are doing the work of attacking personal freedom through Tik Tok and YouTube. Therefore, it was seen that there is a need to be alert. We are not in favor of banning it, but it is better for the government to effectively regulate Tik Tok and close the wrong content and encourage the right content.”
Purushottam Khanal, Chairman of Nepal Telecommunication Authority, informed that companies including ‘Worldlink’ have closed Tiktok from today and correspondence has been sent to the companies that are yet to be closed, and they will be closed soon. Social activist Bindu Periyar Thapa said that banning social media is not the solution, but the government should monitor it by making rules and laws. Rasas
