On the occasion of the 12th International Elephant Day, elephants in Chitwan’s Sauraha were treated to a forest feast.
The United Elephant Operation Cooperative had organized a forest feast for elephants in the community forest of Baghmara. Every year on Elephant Day, elephants are provided with a feast that includes fruits and sugarcane.
In Sauraha, both privately managed and government-owned elephants, as well as those from the National Nature Conservation Fund, were treated to this forest feast. The feast included nutritious foods such as bananas, apples, melons, watermelons and chickpeas.
Participants in the program emphasized the need to implement systematic conservation measures to protect elephants from poaching. It was revealed that there are around 500 elephants in Nepal both wild and domesticated. The celebration of Elephant Day was initiated from Canada in 2012.
