For the past five days the Kali Gandaki Corridor Beni-Jomsom-Corala road section in Raghuganga Rural Municipality-2 of Myagdi district has been completely closed due to maintenance work. This section is part of the route connecting the northern region of Myagdi to Mustang and beyond. The closure was initiated to address the issues related to gravel extraction on the road, and it is expected to last for five days from Saun 28th to Saun 32nd.
Due to the ongoing problem of gravel extraction on the road, the district administration office of Myagdi decided to completely close the road section for the specified period. In order to address this issue permanently the district administration office has undertaken measures to control and manage gravel extraction and to find a sustainable solution.
The assistant chief district officer of Myagdi Dhirendra Raj Pant, supervised the efforts to halt the work of extracting gravel on the road section from Tal to Begkhola by using a bulldozer. This measure was taken to ensure the safety of travelers and vehicles and to address the issue of road damage caused by the extraction activities.
The closure of the road has affected daily transportation, and there are concerns about potential damages to vehicles and inconvenience to travelers. To provide an alternative route, the administration has suggested using the Singal Trail which is a gravel road that connects Chame to Rakhupiple Begkhola providing an option for vehicles to bypass the closed section.
Efforts have been made to minimize the impact of the closure on local residents, tourists and pilgrims who use this road. However due to the long-standing problem of gravel extraction the decision to temporarily close the road section was made to ensure a more effective and permanent solution.
The closure of this road section has also affected the transportation of goods and people to and from the Mustang region. The closure was announced after a jeep, numbered Ga1Ja6820 traveling from Beni to Pokhara was hit by falling debris due to gravel extraction. The driver of the vehicle, Lokjan Sherpa a 40-year-old resident of Mahabhir Annapurna Rural Municipality-7 was injured in the incident and is receiving treatment at Manipal Teaching Hospital in Pokhara.
The closure has caused disruption to daily transportation and the administration is working on repairing the road and finding a sustainable solution to the gravel extraction problem. Various equipment, including bulldozers, backhoe loaders, tractors, and laborers are being used to address the issue.
To ensure the safety of alternative routes, especially the Kachhi and Sankhurola routes, and to facilitate organized traffic movement the administration has implemented traffic management measures and improved safety coordination.
The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure Development and Transport under the guidance of Minister Resham Bahadur Bhandari and in coordination with the Myagdi District Administration Raghuganga Rural Municipality and the Raghuganga Corridor Road Project has initiated the maintenance work on the alternative road. Various machinery and efforts are being employed to repair and improve the alternative route.
In light of the ongoing issues with gravel extraction and road safety the closure of the main road section aims to create a safer and more organized environment for traffic on the alternative route. The district administration office is working to address the root causes of the problem and provide a lasting solution.
