The Gabhar Bhyali Community Gene Bank was established with the objective of conserving ancestral genetic resources in a community-based “homestay.” The Gabhar (Chyama Gabhar Sutaiya Cluster) area was designated as a region, and on February 24, 2079, after research and study by the Nepalese government, the community gene bank was established in the area.
Krishna Chaudhary, the secretary of the community gene bank network and manager of the Gabhar Bhyali Community Homestay, stated that with the establishment of the gene bank, the residents of the Gabhar Bhyali homestay area are actively engaged in the conservation of genetic resources. He said that the community is traditionally committed to protecting genetic diversity.
The Community Gene Bank is responsible for managing the genetic diversity of plants grasses aquatic organisms animals insects and microorganisms found in the region. It was established on February 24, 2079, and included the conservation and utilization of all agricultural species (plants, grasses, livestock, insects, microorganisms, and aquatic organisms).
Nepal is rich in agricultural biodiversity, but due to the rapid loss of indigenous resources, genetic erosion has become intense. Therefore, with the establishment of gene banks, the conservation of various types of genetic resources has been initiated. As the Gabhar Bhyali area is a popular tourist destination, the development of knowledge among tourists about conserving genetic resources is considered important, said Krishna Chaudhary, the secretary of the gene bank network.
Despite being the foundation of life and economic development, around 50% of agricultural biodiversity has been lost. Although a community seed bank was established in Nepal in 2051 BS (1994), its specific impact has not been seen.
