Swayambhunath also known as the Monkey Temple, is a famous Buddhist stupa located to the west of Kathmandu, Nepal. It is considered a Mahachaitya and it stands on a hill in the Kathmandu Valley. According to historical accounts the establishment of Kathmandu and its significance in Nepalese history have strong connections with Swayambhunath.

Legend has it that even before the establishment of Kathmandu this place was inhabited by Lord Manjushree who practiced meditation here. He had cut a gorge at Chobhar to drain the water from the valley before settling in the area. The name Swayambhunath is derived from the Sanskrit term, which means self-originated or self-created signifying the belief that the stupa emerged on its own.

According to the Kimbadanti Swayambhu Purana initially there was a large lake where a lotus flower bloomed and from that lotus Swayambhunath was born. Hence it earned the name Swayambhunath meaning the land of self-originated.

The Bodhisattva Manjushree once saw a lotus flower at Swayambhunath and paid homage there. Impressed by the beauty of the place he prophesied that it would become a suitable dwelling for humans. Following this the gorge at Chobhar was cut and the water from the valley was drained transforming the region into a habitable place. The lotus flower site eventually became Swayambhunath Stupa.

Tourists often refer to Swayambhunath as the Monkey Temple due to the presence of many monkeys in and around the temple complex. The temple is renowned for its spiritual significance breathtaking views of the Kathmandu Valley and the vibrant atmosphere created by the monkeys and pilgrims alike.
